Clay and Alchemy
An exhibition of ceramic pottery by Angelika Lebe
Angelika Lebe is an established ceramist working in France who is coming to India for the first time. She has always been interested in the idea of cultural exchange and draws on diverse influences to create her work. Originally from Germany, she learnt pottery in Berlin. Korean ceramics have also been a potent source of inspiration; she has traveled and trained there. Here Angelika has conducted a week long workshop at Artspace, Baruipur, collaborating with reputed Kolkata artists- Anitya Roy (a graduate of the Government Art College, Kolkata) and Tamal Bhattacharya (a graduate of Santiniketan, masters from Baroda)
Materials set off transformation and bring forth surprises. She has been exploring the options presented by local clay and glazes and bringing her unique set of experiences to them. The aim of the workshop has been the give and take of ideas, approaches, methods and techniques. The results are her works as well of those of the participants. The pieces that have emerged fall outside the ambit of everyone’s usual practice as they have used this opportunity to set themselves new challenges and investigate fresh possibilities.
