Give Raga A Chance
a lecture demonstration on ragas by Partho Bose and Esha Bose
NORTH INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC or HINDUSTANI SANGEET is often just called RAGA MUSIC, as the Raga is central to its form & spirit. Over hundreds of years, the ragas have evolved, changed in form & structure - subject to time and styles/gharanas of performers - but have retained their importance as the very basis of this kind of music. Change is interpreted as a characteristic of any living tradition; as such, the genre of Hindustani Sangeet is no exception. The current scenario in music-performances & audience-response is witnessing a significant transition in the approach to classical performance of a raga - the element of gimmicks at the expense of classicism, audience attitude to raga music - positive & negative - implications for the future and what can be done - by performers & audiences - to GIVE RAGA A CHANCE, so that raga music continues to flourish, evolve - co-existing with experimentations in "fusion" & other forms of music.
This introduction would be punctuated by examples in music for the audience to grasp the points being made, and then would be followed by a demonstration in vocal music & sitar.
